As she rode astride Brutus, Zoe clung to Kerne's unconscious body as the horse trotted after the green butterflies. Kerne's tattered wings kept getting in her way as she tried to hang onto Brutus's mane.
She hummed the melody to Faery Childe. The song conjured up comforting images and feelings of Mom and Dad, and it gave her hope despite the exhaustion making her miserable. Her throat felt like raw meat. The blisters on her hand had multiplied. Although she wanted to find Dad as soon as possible, she needed to find a healer. Quickly.
As Rowan had pointed out, 'what good would Zoe be to Dad, dead. Carrying her staff as she walked alongside Brutus, Rowan occasionally stopped to pick small bits of green herbs that were trying to grow in the forever-November landscape of Faery.
Abby marched ahead constantly surveying the bare tree branches. She wore the black and white striped bag across her chest. She had declared it made a great slingshot. Without her flute, Zoe felt vulnerable. She reached for the white feather tied to her bodice. Rubbing the soft edge of the feather, Zoe wondered how many families Frost and Piper had torn apart.
Releasing the feather, Zoe reached inside her pocket and touched the rose petals in her pocket, another reminder that she had to always remain calm and centered and not to let anger warp the Song of Faery into something dark.
The butterflies ascended one by one higher and higher up into the sky. Zoe watched them as they fluttered away. She sniffed. Suddenly, she smelled something like a campfire. Around a bend there stood a forest thick with evergreens sprinkled with orange and yellow leaves that still clung to the oak trees that surrounded a small thatched cottage.
Smoke rose slowly from a small chimney. Waiting by the cottage's robin's egg blue front door was a woman in an emerald green cloak. The hood shadowed her face. She held a large wooden staff in her right hand. The butterflies landed on her cloak and then dissolved into the green material. There was something motherly about this woman that made Zoe ache for Mom and for Aunt Rachel. She missed them both so badly. The woman lowered her hood, and Zoe saw a wreath of branches and leaves which crowned her long brown hair. She reminded Zoe of a Harvest Queen.
Brutus stopped.
Two large gray and green striped tabby cats with large orange eyes rubbed up against the woman's legs.
"Welcome travelers to Faery," the woman said. She bowed her head slightly to Zoe.
She did likewise. "We seek a healer," Zoe said.
"You have found her. I am Maeve of the Greenwood."
She bent down to the cats, "Quickly. Bring something so that the Prince can be carried into the cottage," said the healer woman to the two cats. The two cats blinked simultaneously and then ran behind the cottage to a small barn. The two cats walked away with their tails stuck high in the air. Zoe wondered if the cats were going to go and get some other people to help with Kerne.
