Keep Score in the Money Game
“In passing, I’ve never felt like I could afford a Fender. Even now, there’s a strange thing at the back of my mind that makes me think I can’t afford a Fender. (Amazing how these things form and stay with you.) A Fender is still a bit of an exotic instrument to me, and even though I could probably afford the factory, it seems out of reach.”
—Sir Paul McCartney
Paul’s quote perfectly illustrates how your feelings about money can be rooted in your past and don’t necessarily reflect your current reality. Sarah Jessica Parker was interviewed on television when she was in the middle of her great success with Sex and the City. Yet she talked about growing up very poor and how she still felt nervous about money, that it could all suddenly disappear, like water down a drain. Like these celebrities, if you don’t consciously work to change your old ideas about having money, you could remain mentally stuck in a reality you left long ago.
But the discipline and commitment of these artists to their purpose led them to phenomenal success, in spite of their holdover feelings of financial inadequacy. Their focus on where they were going, rather than on where they were or where they had been, kept them moving forward towards the prosperity they desired. What usually lifts successful people out of their beginning poorer circumstances is the passion they feel for their purpose. It’s not all about the money and things they might acquire, but rather about the freedom to pursue the path they have chosen—so they can do the work they believe they are meant to do.
But passion is not enough. Passion must be harnessed to discipline. Tiger Woods had to practice his golf swing, Mikhail Baryshnikov had to take ballet classes, Mariah Carey had to vocalize and exercise her five-octave range. We have raw talents, but to hone them takes discipline. Then we must make our skills known in the marketplace—another discipline. We have to reach out beyond the reality we know to the success we desire. We have to think positive every day and send out our ships to reach our goals. We have to learn to swim with Dolphins. Then, if we want to achieve financial success, we have to add this next step: count our money. The money is the score of the game and the amount of money we create will tell us how well we’re doing at the other success strategies.
