RAMPION
I thought getting shot out of orbit, nearly being burned alive, and then crash landing on a strange planet would be the worst of my injuries this week. I did not factor in the possibility of being shot out of the skyâagain!âby a series of laser cannons. I know my flesh is singed, my wings are exhausted and aching, and worst of all: I canât see.
I took a laser to the eyes and now Iâm blind.
Fuck.
I canât track Zel, canât assess how she came through our inelegant landing. I donât know how Iâll repair the pod now, or what the Coalition will do with me if I canât see to fight.
I donât know anything except that everything hurts and I donât think Iâve ever been so tired in my life. And I would eat rocks if it would do something about the gnawing hunger in my gut. The planetâs council is stingy when it comes to feeding prisoners, and we only had one meager meal each day in the Spire. Even so, Iâm grateful for the paltry servings now. It takes a lot of energy to fire up my internal combustion organs, not to mention flying. While already injured.
My hearing still works, though, so I can hear Zelâs breathless little pants as she stands up and extricates herself from our tangle of limbs.
âAre you okay?â she asks, and I just groan and shake my head.
âNo. Those dublyiks shot me in the eyes.â
âWhat?â Her voice sounds horrified, and her gentle, cool fingers land on my cheeks as sheâapparentlyâbegins to inspect me.
âCan you see anything at all? Or is it total blackness?â
I blink a few times and try to assess my vision. âIt is not completely black, no. But I cannot see any shapes. Just blurs. It might as well be black.â
âCan you see this?â
A dark smear zips across my field of vision and I blink again. âI think so, yes? What was that?â
âMy fingers. I just moved them in front of your face very quickly. The fact that you could sense that movement is a good sign. This injury might be temporary.â
âReally? This is possible?â I love the idea of not having to adapt to a visionless existence.
âWell, I canât be sure. And I need to get a light and test your pupil dilation and contraction, but I have hope. Of course, this isnât my specialty. But you may have noticed that while we brought a lot of medication from my apartment, I havenât been giving you everything. Thereâs something we havenât used that might help. Itâs experimental, which is why I havenât treated you with it before now. But desperate times and all that.â
Her fingertips are still dancing across my skin: my cheek here, my forearm there. Lightly assessing me for injuries while keeping me distracted with talk of restored vision.
âWhat about the rest of me? I will live, yes?â
âWith some rest and medical attention, sure. You have some nasty new lacerations and burns, and I think you reopened some of your older wounds, but weâll deal with it.
