Chapter Fourteen

Fifteen minutes later, Vic and Tamara appeared on the road. Nathan had never been happier to be blinded by headlights. Before the truck fully stopped, Tamara had jumped out and charged for her daughter with arms open wide. She drenched Shelby in tears and hugs and kisses and a non-stop verbal assault of love. For her part, Shelby returned the tears, kisses, and hugs in equal measure.

After a short time, Nathan said, “Let’s go back. It might still be dangerous out here, and it’s damn cold.”

“Thank you,” Tamara said, gazing up at Nathan. “Thank you.”

“No need,” he said. “You followed and fought them all the way here. I just played clean up.”

She opened her mouth to protest but then smiled and nodded. They all climbed into the truck, Shelby and Tamara clinging to each other like survivors of a plane crash, and Vic drove back to the restaurant.

“I’ll get some coffee going,” she said as she parked the truck. “You want a hot shower?”

Clutching her mother, Shelby nodded. “Please.”

Once inside, Vic led them to a staircase in the back. They climbed to a small, well-maintained apartment above the restaurant. Soft, gray carpeting and a well-worn green couch did more for Nathan’s aches than the delicious smell of coffee brewing in the kitchenette.

He settled on the couch and Tamara claimed a deep-cushioned chair. Vic guided Shelby to the bathroom and promised the shower would get hot after a few minutes. She then returned to warm everyone up with mugs of coffee and, as a last minute thought, some chicken noodle soup. Nathan leaned his head on the armrest and closed his eyes.

“Not a bad idea,” Tamara said. “I feel like I could sleep for three days.”

But Nathan was not resting. His mind raced through the setup of the factory floor, the pathway leading to the warehouse, and the arrangement of the jail cells inside. He counted how many men he knew Isabella had at minimum and tried to determine what tactics could get him in there to save those girls.

He looked at the clock sitting atop Vic’s television — 2:47 am. The night was racing along. That brought a series of chilling thoughts into his head.

After their escape from the warehouse, nobody had followed. They never had to fight in the woods or stay silently hidden. On the road, they never once came into contact with scouts or hunters or anybody from Isabella’s team — not a single Snake Party man. Which Nathan took to mean that Isabella ordered them to stand down.

While he would like to have flattered himself that she made such an order out of either fear or respect towards him, he knew better. Shelby represented a lot of money lost. As a practical business decision, Isabella would not want to jeopardize the rest of her investment. Rather than lose everything, she would go ahead with moving the girls she still had.

If she failed to finish it all by dawn, they would be stuck another day. That risked scaring those waiting on the ship.
