The closure of classrooms and colleges caused by COVID-19 put a dent in the ambition of corporate gamified surveillance platforms, but some pivoted quickly. ClassDojo saw its Beyond School service, launched in 2018, boom during the pandemic.119 Billed as “an amazing way for families to bring the magic of ClassDojo home,” its profits tripled during the pandemic. As of 2021, ClassDojo had fifty-one million users, including one in six elementary school families in the US.120 Westerners fear the spectre of social credit scores, but they are seemingly blind to similarly gamified and coercive technologies being used in their own countries.

Meanwhile in China, the government is slowing down the rollout of facial recognition systems in schools.121 In 2019, Lei Chaozi, director of science and technology at China’s Ministry of Education, told the Chinese publication The Paper that the government would “curb and regulate” their use: “We need to be very careful when it comes to students’ personal information. Don’t collect it if it’s not necessary. And try to collect as little as possible if we have to.” Our fascination around reprehensible Chinese surveillance practices all too often only distracts from our own governments’ doings.
