After almost three long hours in the park, Julian gives Camryn a piggy back ride on the trek home. She insists on showing him the cartwheels she just mastered at gymnastics, and talks him into trying it, too. She and I both get a good laugh out of that. I don’t know how he has the energy left to carry her the whole way, but judging by the way his arm muscles are flexing, he has definitely trained for this. She finally gets quiet and yawns about halfway home, and by the time we are walking in the front door, her eyelids are fluttering closed. I point for Julian to lay her down on the couch and grab a blanket to cover her with. Julian and I just stand there for a few seconds, watching her sleep yet again.

“She is the coolest kid ever,” he says.

“For sure,” I agree, looking over at him. “Do you want something to drink? We don’t have much, just water and lemonade.”

“Water is fine.”

I grab us each a bottle out of the fridge and ask Julian if he wants to sit on the back porch for a few minutes. The door to the porch has a screen door attached, so I leave the main door open in case Camryn wakes up and calls for me.

I nod. “I know. I believe you. And I want that for her, too. But I hope you understand that with her being so young, I just don’t think it’s time to tell her that you’re her father yet.”

“I know. But I want to someday. If I had known about her I would have been there from day one.”

“I can tell.” Sadly, I am still glad he wasn’t. Because where would that have left me and Clay? Where would that have left me?

We swing in silence for a few minutes, and suddenly Julian puts his arm around me. “This was a huge shock, and it came in the middle of us getting to know each other. But I don’t want that to stop. Do you think we could go out for dinner again sometime? Just me and you?”

I hesitate. Here’s the moment where I let him down easy.

“Julian, I don’t know if that’s a good idea. Things are much more complicated now. My main focus for the last five years has been Camryn, and it always will be. If things were to get messed up between us, it could hurt her, too. I want us to always have a friendly relationship so that she can have both of us around at the same time.”

“Who
