From the conservative corporate titans in the Climate Council, to the lefties pushing the Green New Deal, to the centrists at Brookings, there is a consensus among thinking people that we can save the planet and prosper economically while doing so. But I said “thinking people,” so that kinda leaves out Donald Jackass Trump.
The “green” Democrats should be talking about is money. Rather than focus on how terrible the American people are for burning coal or driving cars, Democrats should focus on the jobs we will create, the wealth we will build, the cool toys we will have. Stop being scolds and nags; start being salespeople of a new prosperity. This allows you to sidestep the debate about whether climate science is real. (Why go there? It’s like debating people who say that the science on gravity is not real, even after they’ve dropped a brick on their foot.) Try this: “Maybe you’re right. But think of this: if you’re wrong, and climate change makes earth uninhabitable for humans, then we all die, but first we have famines and floods and wars. But if I’m right, and we can take steps to reduce carbon pollution, those steps can build a new green economy: we get rich, build wealth, and get cool new toys.”
Some of the most successful churches out there preach what is called the “prosperity gospel”—the notion that God wants you to be rich. Whatever you think of the theology behind it, you have to admire the marketing. Which preacher is going to fill a fifteen-thousand-seat arena: the one who says we’re sinful and depraved and going to hell, or the one who says God wants you to drive a BMW and live in a mansion and fly on a private jet?
Preach the prosperity gospel on climate change, Democrats. “We’re all gonna get rich” is a more appealing message than “We’re all gonna die.” In fact, both are true. I’m just advocating that we accentuate the positive.
