Departure

The crossing starts from the moment you get under way, but for this passage we will assume you have safely left Yarmouth, negotiated the Hurst Narrows and are now at the south-west end of the Needles Channel, with the lighthouse abeam. This is the time to mark your position on the chart and note your ‘departure’ in the log. This may seem pedantic, but it is the starting point of the crossing from where all subsequent calculations of position will be based.

Yes, you probably have a GPS and a chart plotter, but a good navigator will always check the boat’s position by all means possible. Paper charts and the log do not rely on a power source, and they will withstand knocks and salt water while remaining perfectly useable.
