MASTERING THE ART OF SOCIAL JIUJITSU

I won’t share everything Jeff writes about in that article (because you need to follow him and read his articles), but I do have to mention one part that caught my eye: remarkably polite people are masters of the art of social jiujitsu. Jeff defines social jiujitsu as “the ancient art of getting you to talk about yourself without you ever knowing it happened.”

As one who is insatiably curious, I enjoy hearing people’s backstories, what got them started down the career paths they are on, transformational moments in their lives and careers, the influencers they follow, the books they read, etc. It’s about simply asking questions, as Jeff says, “the right questions.” Getting to know someone isn’t being manipulative. It’s having a meaningful conversation to find mutual connecting points. Too often, people get caught up on the conversation of business and forget it’s the personal connection that matters most. People need to know who you are and what you stand for. If they like you and trust you, it opens doors for a relationship, whether business or personal.
