A cow’s udder should have short, small teats and well-balanced quarters.

Look for Clues

You can’t tell by looking-at your heifer’s udder exactly what it will be like when she matures, but there are clues. Does she have small teats? If her teats are fat or long at this age, they will be even worse when she calves. Poor udders are a serious fault. Many beef cows have to be removed from herds because of this.

Getting Started with a Purebred Heifer

Most breed associations have regional managers who work with cattle breeders to promote their breed, help people get started in the purebred business, and help them improve their herds. They often assist junior members who are starting their own breeding projects. If you contact your breed association, someone will direct you to local breeders who could sell you a heifer. They can also tell you where you can show your heifer if you want to show her in purebred shows and how you can become involved in state and national junior breed activities. Once you buy your registered heifer, give the seller all the information needed to transfer the registration to you.
