What to Look For in a Supplement

Boron is one of the micronutrients your bones need for which a supplement is your best option. Although present in some foods, including raisins, hazelnuts, almonds, dried apricots, avocado, dates, peanuts, prunes, and walnuts, the amount of boron, even in these foods in which this trace mineral is most concentrated, is really small. Raisins are the richest food source of boron, and you’d have to eat 3 ounces of raisins (185 calories worth) to gain 4.5 mg of boron. Three ounces (6 tablespoons, which deliver 570 calories and 48 grams of fat) of peanut butter will give you less than 2 milligrams of boron. Eat this amount of peanut butter every day and you can forget zipping up your jeans. Supplementation is obviously a more practical and less “weighty” means of receiving the daily 3–5 mg of boron you need for optimal bone health.
