It’s dark outside the next time I open my eyes, and the only light in the room is the soft glow of a phone to my right.

Adam’s sitting there, with headphones on his ears, looking, entranced at his phone.

“Are you watching porn?”

I wish I’d recorded the way he jumps a foot in his seat almost as much as I wish I could laugh as much as I want to.

“Fuck, dude. No, I’m not watching porn,” he sighs. “I’m watching Harry’s press conference on YouTube, it’s almost better than the one Aunt Gab gave after I came out.”

“Really?” he nods, “Show me.”

“What can you tell us about Mike McKinnley’s injury?” a reporter asks in the background.

“He had two broken ribs and a punctured lung that collapsed when he arrived at the hospital. He had surgery and is stable now. Expected to make a full and speedy recovery.” Crawford’s words sound monotone, completely different from when he was here before. That’s also the way he always sounds when he gives the rare press conference.

“Is it true he’s dating your son? The same son who’s been mysteriously absent from your public life for almost two decades?”

Crawford sighs heavily. “And this is why I have to stand in front of all of you today instead of being there for my son in this difficult time.” He makes a long pause, looking down at the podium in front of him. When he looks up, there’s so much anger and hardness in his eyes that my brows shoot up. “I think it’s absurd, idiotic, and insulting that people care so much about my son dating a player. First of all because, seriously, who gives a fuck. Secondly, Mike’s health, and only his health should be discussed after what happened yesterday.

“Most of all, I think it’s insulting because you were all happy enough letting my son live a private life until you learned he’s in a relationship with another man. So let’s add bigoted to what I think this whole situation is.

“Just to be clear, neither I nor any superior of Mike in this facility gives a flying FUCK about who he’s dating. I thought you’d all learned from Gabrielle Darnell, but since you haven’t, here’s a tidbit you can spread around to get all the clicks your greedy little brains want. I’m bisexual, and I don’t care, nor have I ever cared that my son is gay or if any of my players are something other than straight. You should all be ashamed of yourselves for how you’ve twisted this tragic event into gossip and not a serious injury that put one of my player’s life at risk.”

He walks off, and you can only hear the bang of the press room’s door hitting the wall.

I look at Adam, “Wow.” I bet the clip already has tens of millions of views. I can’t believe he did that. Only goes to show what he’ll do to protect his son. Unlike my parents. Not thinking about it. “I only
