Chapter 12
ZOE MANEUVERED HER motorcycle into the office building’s basement car park and looked around for a suitable spot in the crowded facility. She found a small space in a corner and turned off the ignition just as a large Ford was parking, its owner giving Zoe a dirty look as he parked next to her. Zoe pulled off her helmet and gloves and put them in the sidecar, then grinned at the driver. She patted the bike and strolled the short distance to the steps leading up to Eva’s workplace.
Debbie looked up at the whirring fans and sighed. It had been a very long and tiring day and the heat had made everyone a little more cranky and irritable. She looked at the clock again and realized that she would soon be able to shut the door, much to everyone’s relief.
Debbie heard the stairway door open and hoped it was either Alexander or Dierdre coming back from appointments and not another client. She was very relieved to see Zoe push the doors open.
“Hi, Zoe.”
“Hey, Deb! Wow, it’s hot in here!” Zoe picked up a magazine that was lying on the low tables and fanned herself.
“The Federal Government Sauna. We’re open for business,” Debbie joked.
“Is Eva still seeing clients?”
“No, she’s gone down to the file room and if you think it’s hot up here, you should be subjected to our filing room. We call it hell.”
“Hell?”
“Boiling hot all the time, even in winter,” Debbie explained. Their filing room was situated below the basement car park. It had no ventilation and it was stuffy with all the old files from the various departments in the building. Debbie had had the misfortune of spending a considerable amount of time down there filing away. She hated the cockroaches that survived in the heat and she hated the mice that scurried around and left their calling cards in between filing bays. She gratefully accepted any offer by the interpreters to take files down there.
“Eva hates the heat,” Zoe said. Her partner suffered a great deal in the summer and cold baths were always a treat. Zoe had found a unique way to cool Eva down during the very warm nights by taking a towel and wetting it, then placing it over Eva’s feet. It cooled her down and made it easier for her to sleep. They had tried sleeping out on the balcony, but the mosquitoes made a meal out of them. So it was either the cold bath or the wet towel. Zoe loved the heat, so it didn’t bother her as much. She often wondered why they didn’t move to a colder climate than Sydney’s.
“Does she?”
“Oh yeah. She’s a winter bunny that one. Give her a cold day and she’s happy,” Zoe replied. “So how long do you think she’ll be?”
“I’m not sure. She was going to pick up some files for herself and she said she would get a few that I needed. All depends if she can find the others before passing out from the heat.
