Emery

We gathered in the tea room of Mom’s shop. Cory kept his arm around me, and I rubbed the sleep from my eyes. It was late morning, but I’d had the hardest time staying awake lately. More than likely, it was due to the copious amounts of sex that I’d been having, but saying that felt cheap. Normal people had sex all the time and didn’t need to sleep twelve or more hours a day because of it. But then again, not everyone brought a dragon to bed.

And not everyone was pretty much guaranteed to be pregnant by said dragon, either.

“Emery,” the stranger in the room said. I assumed it was Sam. It looked like he wanted to scold me for continuing my sexual relationship with Cory, but he stopped short. The look on Cory’s face was a warning, and even this Sam person knew better than to ignore it. “... Nice to meet you.”

“Nice to meet you, too,” I replied. “Um... sorry about being in my pajamas and everything.”

“Clothes aren’t important.” Sam waved a hand dismissively. “At least you’re dressed. Better than me, most days. It’s good. It’s all good.”

Yup, that was definitely the guy I remembered from our brief conversation on the phone. I looked to Cory for guidance, but he was busy keeping an eye on Sam. A strange, otherworldly feeling washed over me that convinced me I knew what Cory was feeling. It told me that Cory didn’t trust Sam in the least. I couldn’t blame him. Dressed in clothes a few sizes too big, and slightly slouched over like he was ashamed of his height, Sam was a questionable character. I felt like there was some history I was missing between him and Cory, but I didn’t want to ask about it.

Mom had brought out the chamomile tea, and that meant that something had gone down.

“So.” Sam clapped his hands together, then rubbed his palms like he was plotting something. “The plan. I have a bunch of them. Escape plans, contingency plans, recovery plans, evasion plans...”

“Maybe let’s start with what’s most immediately important,” Mom suggested. “Or, let’s make things even simpler. Let’s talk about what’s going to go on with the other dragons Cory has left behind.”

“Nope.” Sam shook his head. “Bad idea. Terrible idea. Before we do anything, we need to—”

“There are lives languishing because of our inaction,” Cory said. He kept his voice as stripped of emotion as he could, but I felt the hurt he harbored inside. I pushed my chair a little closer and slipped my hand over his thigh. Now that he’d washed out the strange, matte-black temporary hair dye he’d woken from stasis with, the true color of his hair shone in the room’s light—lustrous black that sometimes shimmered into red if the sun hit it just right. When I was close to him like this, it always caught my eye. “I was able to recover from my stasis thanks to the heartsong, but the others haven’t been as lucky.
