Chapter Four
After the perfection of the night before, the following day threatened to test Ellieâs optimistic outlook from the very beginning. She was woken far too early by the buzz of a lazy bee that had flown in through the open bedroom window, and had to spend ten minutes coaxing it out, by which time she was too awake to go back to sleep. She met Rose in the kitchen, and proceeded to burn a piece of sourdough bread.
âGlad you spent all that extra money on the sourdough loaf now?â Rose asked smugly. âDo you want me to poach you some eggs before I go?â
âYouâve got an early shift,â Ellie said, âand I should be able to make toast.â
âThat toaster has always been temperamental, but weâve got a good relationship now, so I donât see the point of getting a new one.â
âCould you give me the key to your relationship, then?â Ellie scraped black bits off the toast to reveal more black bits, then cut herself another slice.
âWhatâs got your goat? I would have thought youâd be floating on air after last night.â
âWhy?â Ellie turned. âBecause you very generously offered to drive Arthur home, giving Jago and I some alone time, and then came back just at the wrong moment?â
âAh, so itâs frustration that Iâm on the receiving end of, is it?â Rose didnât seem remotely perturbed by Ellieâs accusations. âGo round there this morning and jump his bones, then.â
âIâm not â¦â Ellie sighed. âItâs not like that.â
âWhat do you mean, not like that? There is an undeniable sizzle, and he is perfect for you right now, Elowen. I meant what I said last night.â
âYes, but I donât want to just sleep with him and then say see you later.â She stared at the toaster, desperate for her second piece of bread not to burn, because it felt like a sign of her competency as an adult. She really had got out on the wrong side of the bed. It took her a few moments to realize that Rose hadnât replied. âWhat?â she asked, popping the release button on the toaster. She was relieved to see that she had a piece of golden sourdough toast.
âYou donât want to just sleep with him and then say see you later?â Rose repeated.
âNo, of course not.â Ellie spread butter on her toast.
âOf course not?â
âStop repeating everything I say. What is your problem?â
âBut Ellie,â Rose said, âthatâs all youâve done since Mark. Not that youâve done it very often, but when youâve found a guy itâs been no strings attached, a bit of fun and then move on. But now â¦â She shook her head. âYou really like Jago, donât you? Itâs more than just physical attraction.â
Ellie took a bite of her toast. âIt would make sense,â she said evenly, when sheâd finished her mouthful. âIâve spent quite a bit of time with him. Of course weâre going to build up some kind of rapport.â
Rose shook her head. âNo no no. You really like him.
