I had used the Aterazawaâs kitchen a few times in the past. Whenever they would have Miu and I over for dinner, I would help with the cleanup and dish washing. When I mentioned I would be stopping by today, Tomomi let me know that I was free to use the kitchen, so I took her up on it.
I lightly warmed up the congee that I had brought over in a pot and poured a portion out into a bowl before bringing it to Takkunâs room.
âSorry to keep you waiting. Here you go.â
âThank you,â Takkun said as he sat up and reached out for the bowl of congee.
âOh, hold on, it might be a bit hot still.â I grabbed the bowl before he could and scooped up a mouthful in the spoon. Then, I blew on the spoonful several times to cool it down. âHere, itâs ready. Open up.â
âHuh...?â Takkun blushed and froze up as I brought the spoon towards his mouth. Seeing his reaction, I finally realized my mistake.
âOh! I-Iâm sorry. I-I didnât mean to! I always do this for Miu, so I just... Whenever she gets sick, she becomes such a baby, so!â I shouted, bright red.
âI-Itâs all right! I understand!â Takkun said back, still blushing.
After weâd finished yelling at each other, Takkun took the tray I had brought the food on and began to eat the congee, this time on his own.
âOoh, itâs good.â
âReally? Iâm glad to hear that.â Takkun continued to scarf down the congee. Itâs a good sign that he has an appetite. Heâs got some color to his face too. I hope he continues to get better. As I watched him eat, I was suddenly thinking of the past. âI used to be able to feed you...â
âWhat?â
âDidnât I spoon-feed you a bunch of times?â
âWell...isnât that when I was younger? You kept doing it, so I just obliged...â
âHee hee, thatâs right. You seemed so embarrassed every time, but you let me feed you anyway. It was so cute.â
Takkunâs face turned red, and he was lost for words. His reaction was so cute, I couldnât help but keep going. âSpeaking of the past, you were calling me Mommy Ayako earlier.â
âGuh! Ack, gack!â Despite choking on his food, Takkun managed to somehow get the congee down. âY-You heard that?â
âI did.â
âShoot... No, I mean, I was just dreaming about the past, thatâs why.â
âHe he, it feels so nostalgic to be called Mommy Ayako. You suddenly started calling me Miss Ayako one day.â
âOf course...I couldnât keep calling you Mommy Ayako forever.â
âThatâs true...â He was rightâof course he couldnât. The boy whoâd been ten years old when weâd met was now twenty. In the past ten years, he had grown from a boy into a man. Despite that, there was a part of me that kept treating him like a child. That was why I hadnât noticedâwhy I couldnât noticeâthe feelings he had been harboring. Because of that, I was currently confused and wandering.
Takkun wasnât at fault. All heâd done was live his life earnestly, devoted continuously to his feelings.
