CHAPTER 30

Cole

The long drive around the beach was breathtaking and picturesque. Cole couldn't even remember the last time he'd been out here, but as he listened to the waves crashing to shore, smelled the fresh sea air, and warm touch of Benjamin's hand as he reached for his, couldn't have been more delightful.

The gentle hum of the engine of the limo as they glided down the smooth road that bordered the beach was relaxing. They passed by the glow of the headlights, the occasional street light, and the giant moon that hung low over the ocean, casting its’ rays upon the majestic cliffs. As they passed a bridge over the highway, the sky glittered with millions of stars.

The limo pulled into a parking space that overlooked the beach. Someone had set up a campsite in the distance. Other than that it was just the two of them.

"Come on!" Benjamin said, as they stepped out of the limo. He pulled Cole by the hand down the hill. He cupped his hands and yelled up at the limo driver, "I'll call you when we're ready." Benjamin turned to Cole. "Ready to do this?"

"Ready to do what? What is this?" Cole asked with a smile on his face.

The whole experience was a complete surprise. He wasn't expecting anything like this at all. Not after Christina hurricaned back into their lives, not after she forced her way back into Benjamin’s home like a coup hell-bent on taking her place back on the throne. Tonight, Benjamin made Cole forget all about that. Tonight was beyond romantic, it was perfect. He felt safe with this man, his man by his side. It was strange for Cole to feel so secure, but it was one of the most comforting feelings he’d had in a long, long time.

Benjamin raised a single finger to his lips and said, "Shh! Just wait and see." And he gave Cole a wink.

It was moments like this, times like this with Benjamin, that nothing was more concrete. Cole trusted him but excitement of the moment made his heart beat faster. Almost louder than the waves crashing upon the beach.

Benjamin's hand outreached to touch Cole's. "Come with me," he said, "It's just you and me tonight. We can be ourselves here."

At first, Cole retracted his hand. A knee-jerk response happening to hide who he is for so many years. But Benjamin was right. In this moment it was just the two of them and no one else around. They could be themselves there. His words brought Cole comfort and he nodded toward the tent off in the distance, with the campfire glowing.

"Well, what about them?" asked Cole.

"What about who?" Benjamin asked with a smirk on his face as if he knew something and he wasn't telling Cole.

"Who? Whoever setup that campsite." Cole said, gesturing to the site. He wondered who it was, if perhaps they’d had the same idea that Benjamin had. It's not like someone from a camp site would beat the two of them up.
