Express Secure Parking Moscow, Russia

Teresa sat in the American agent’s SUV, trembling. She had been on plenty of ops during her career, but they were usually fairly tame. She was sent into a nightclub or casino or some event, dressed provocatively, there to seduce someone so they could then be blackmailed or otherwise coerced into giving information. Depending on who the target was, yes, it could be dangerous, but she had never feared for her life until today. Her country was after her. A country, if the radio was to be believed, now led by a madman hell-bent on restoring the Soviet Union to a former glory it never possessed.

The Americans were still in her ear, and for almost an hour had been telling her nothing she wanted to hear. The American agent, Sherrie, had been believed compromised and couldn’t make the rendezvous with everything going on. She didn’t know whom to trust, and right now, tucked away in a parking garage where there were no cameras, she was certain she was far safer here than with some unknown agent.

Unfortunately, there was only one person she trusted, and that was Jack, and he was out of the picture permanently. She had no idea what to do. Security was only growing tighter in the city, the rhetoric emerging from the Kremlin becoming more volatile. Soon, she would have no choice but to trust the Americans.

Her shoulders slumped as she squeezed her eyes shut, battling the temptation to cry in frustration. With the benefit of hindsight, she should have insisted on extraction rather than the exchange with Jack in Warsaw. It had simply never occurred to her that it would come to this. The Americans were supposed to receive the intel, have time to act on it, and prevent what had happened. Never in her wildest dreams would she have imagined Jack would somehow be implicated in the assassination of the president, nor that her own government would suspect her involvement as well.

The comms beeped in her ear and she flinched, unaccustomed to the state-of-the-art gear. “Red Sonja, Control. Do you read, over?”

Her heart raced. “Confirmed, Control, I read you.”

“We have good news. Skylark is clear for the moment. She’s on her way to collect you. ETA fifteen minutes.”

She smiled and her entire body relaxed, if only for a moment. “That’s good news, Control. I assume you have an extraction plan.”

“It’s being put together as we speak. We’ll have you to a safe house in less than an hour, then into the underground railroad as quickly as possible. There could be some delays, however, due to the tightening security in Moscow.”

“Understood.”

She checked her watch. Fifteen minutes. But that was an estimate. It could be ten, it could be twenty. Hell, it could be an hour if something went wrong. “Keep me posted at five-minute intervals on her ETA.”

“Roger that, five-minute intervals.”

Movement in the mirrors caught her eye and she sat up from her crouched position, her heart leaping into her throat at the sight of a vehicle parked behind her, blocking her in.
