QUESTION 4: What can this new story look like for me?

Once I understood the difference between a job and work, I felt like someone had told me I could bring an extra carry-on onto the plane. Up until this point, I had spent hours trying to pack everything I owned into one tiny suitcase. My passions, my priorities, my talents, my financial needs, my values, my identity, my desire to change the world, my lifestyle goals—all of it into one small roller bag marked J-O-B. I felt guilty when I couldn’t get it all in and frustrated at the thought of everything that I owned and all of who I am being squeezed into that one bag. When the bag finally broke, I thought that I would have to replace it or I just wouldn’t be able to fly.

But now, with my new story, there were two bags that I could fit my pursuits in. And better yet, no one could tell me how to pack them. I could put some of my passions in one bag and some of my passions in the other. I could make one bag be all about my purpose, and still have one bag to carry the skills that would get me paid. I knew that there would be times when I would want one bag to fit inside the other so I could carry all the same items together. And there would be other times when I would only fit the absolute basics and a few important priorities (like the need to make money or support my family) into the job bag, with everything else going into the work case.

Either a job or work can be in service of your purpose.
