Midlife Crisis

My awakening to this truth came in an unlikely place a few years earlier. It came on a simple road in northern Spain called the Camino de Santiago.

The Camino de Santiago is a 500-mile walk through northern Spain, through the Pyrenees beginning in the South of France and ending where the remains of the apostle James are said to be buried in the town of Santiago de Compostela, Galicia. It is the world’s most famous spiritual pilgrimage. Among the people who have traveled its course are Saint Francis of Assisi, Charlemagne, Chaucer, and Dante.

I traveled to the Camino when I was twenty-three years old. I had been in LA for five years. And yet despite my encounter with Spielberg, him setting up a meeting for me with his production company, and getting connected with the very spiritual teachers whom I had come to learn from, I still felt as if I was tapping into only a fraction of my potential. I was playing small when I was ready to play big.

I had continued to reach out to other entertainment managers, hoping they might seize the opportunity to partner with me. I called, sent letters, knocked on doors. Usually I heard nothing. And then suddenly one of them responded. I was invited to come to their new offices. They had just begun a new firm and were looking to add new talent.

I couldn’t believe it. These guys represented some of the biggest names in the world. And they had just set up a meeting with me.

When I walked into their offices, I looked around. They were so new that they didn’t even have office furniture yet. We had to sit on the floor in the conference room. It wasn’t exactly how I had envisioned things. But I gave my pitch to one of the managers. At the end he looked a bit stunned and then said quietly, “Give me a moment. I want you to meet my partner.” I did the entire pitch again, this time for his partner. They spoke out in the hallway for a few minutes. And then they walked back in with hands outstretched to shake mine. “Okay, we want to sign you. We think you have what it takes, and we know exactly what to do with you to make you a big star.”

I was flabbergasted. I couldn’t believe it. After so much rejection, I was just used to it. And now someone was saying yes!

They said they were going to draw up the contract and then they would be in touch about my coming in to sign it. I hardly knew what to say, but I shook their hands vigorously, saying, “Thank you! Thank you!”

As I drove home, I still couldn’t believe it. Here it was, everything I’d been striving for. A chance to reach millions of people. These managers would be able to open doors I never could.

But as the car made its way through the traffic of La Cienega, I couldn’t ignore it.
