Chapter Seven

Slade

I was pissed.

When I spotted the ring on her nightstand I wanted to kill someone. That was as good as a betrayal to me. I didn’t get an expensive engagement ring just for it to sit on a nightstand, forgotten. If I went out without mine, Trinity would be livid. She could lie and say otherwise but we both knew that was bullshit.

I sat on the couch and stared blankly at the TV. I was so angry and I was trying to calm down. I thought I might kill someone. I wasn’t sure where the fury stemmed from. It wasn’t like I spotted her with some guy.

But I was still angry.

Unable to sit in the apartment any longer I went to Cayson’s and knocked loudly on his door.

“Coming, Slade,” he shouted.

How did he know it was me?

He opened the door with damp hair like he just got out of the shower. “What’s up?” He walked back into the apartment so I could enter. Then he pulled a t-shirt on.

“I just didn’t want to be home.”

“Why?” he asked. He ran his fingers through his hair and tried to dry it.

“Because my fiancé pissed me the hell off.”

“Isn’t she out with Skye tonight?” he asked.

“Yeah, but she left something behind.”

He stared at me blankly.

“Her engagement ring. She fucking left it on the goddamn nightstand.” My anger burst out uncontrollably. I wanted to wrap my hand around her neck and choke her.

“I doubt she did it on purpose, Slade. She loves that ring.”

“So?” I hissed. “How would she feel if I took mine off?”

“Well, that would be different since it’s a tattoo…”

I was irritated that he was being so calm about this. “Do you think this is a joke? How would you feel if Skye left her ring at home while she went out with the girls on the town?”

“Slade,” he said firmly. “She didn’t do it on purpose.”

“What kind of excuse is that?” I snapped.

“Why are you so upset about this?” he asked. “You think Trinity really wants to get married and then wants to cheat on you? That doesn’t even make sense.”

“That’s not what I’m saying.”

“Then what are you saying?” he asked. “Because I can’t figure it out.”

“I just…one of the reasons why I proposed was because I wanted her to be mine forever.”

He scratched his head like he was confused. “She feels the same way.”

“Let’s cut the shit,” he said. “She’s way out of my league. I know it. You know it. Trinity knows it. People who see us on the street together know it…”

“Where are you going with this?”

“That ring is like a bug repellent. When guys see it, they’ll back off. If she doesn’t wear it, they’ll swarm in. And what if they are better than me? More charming than me?”

He nodded his head in understanding. “Since she picked you over Reid, I think you’re okay.”

“I’m serious, Cayson. That ring is all I have.”

He patted my shoulder. “You’re stressing out over nothing. Trinity loves you, whether she wears a ring or not.
