These are often objects of derision. ‘Chocolate Fire Guard’, my teammates called me, as I stood in goal on frozen Saturdays on the football field. Deliberately making an object out of a material that does not work allows you to explore both the nature of the material and the shape of the object.

I love cast chocolate objects. When I was a child we had chocolate ‘smoking kits’, including pipes, cigarettes and cigars. Children these days have to make do with chocolate tool kits, which are still fun but lack the desultory allure of self-harm simulacra.

Casting objects is a way of excavating meaning. Objects can be cast in plaster, rubber, bronze, iron, concrete, jelly and resin. I avoid resin. I once taught a student who made a project of masturbating into ashtrays filled with resin. The resin captured his output forever, but later that summer he developed cancer and had to have a testicle removed. For artists, it is important to wash your hands before you go to the bathroom as well as afterwards.
