The Fifth Suite film project almost stopped before it began. In June 1994, Ma was flying from the United States to Tokyo to meet with Tamasaburo, director Niv Fichman, and the rest of the documentary team. During a layover in the Detroit airport, Ma received some bad news from Fichman. The project was over. Only hours before Fichman was to begin filming, Tamasaburo had decided he did not want to do it. Ma was unwilling to give up. He went to Japan anyway. Once there, Ma managed to talk Tamasaburo into completing the film.11
