The First Female Slack-ers

Long before Marlene Dietrich or Katharine Hepburn donned slacks and trousers, sharp-shooting outdoors-woman Calamity Jane bucked convention by wearing britches just like the boys. After traveling to the West with her family, and honing impressive shooting skills along the way, Jane joined the US Army (a move that was virtually unheard of for women in the 1860s). Because the army had no uniforms for ladies, she was outfitted in regulation men’s trousers. In the following years, as she battled Native Americans alongside Buffalo Bill and Wild Bill Hickock, and helped create the town of Deadwood, South Dakota, she did so in pants — never again returning to her petticoat and skirt-dressing ways.
