Chapter Eleven

Loki remained curled up in the armchair by the window as he looked out over the city. This reprieve wouldn’t last long. He had his old rooms back, and in general, they looked pretty much the same if rather bare, but nothing was the same. The door was locked, so he was basically a prisoner again. At least he had a view this time.

He was sure Thor had plenty of time to speak to Luca so far, and Odin had probably coached him on what to say. Loki hadn’t wanted to hear the whole conversation, knowing it would veer off into what a sack of shit the adopted brother was.

Luca had for sure found the room that contained the most precious thing from Ymir. By sheer chance, Loki’s prison was nearby. Back when it was created, America hadn’t been settled by Europeans, and Native American tribes had lived on that continent. That area had been woods, and Waving wasn’t even a thought yet.

“Show me Luca,” he told the Mirror since he figured Thor would have had enough time to talk to him. The fairies giggled.

Luca was sitting in Thor’s room. If it was anything about him being a killer, he didn't want to hear it.

“How did I find the room? All I did was fall down the stairs.”

“The old stories say the touch of death could open the rift.”

“So you imprisoned Loki near it and had no idea?”

Thor nodded. “Yes. We picked the area because it was wooded and away from people. Fate has strange ways of doing things.”

“That means I didn’t just get a concussion. I actually almost died down there?”

Thor shrugged. “If you hit your head the right way, yes. You humans are more fragile, and it's easier to break your skull.”

Luca stared at him for a second. It probably was quite hard to come to terms that he’d been minutes or seconds from death.

Loki hugged the Mirror to him. Nothing good lay ahead for him now. One of the fairies squeaked, and a tiny hand pushed on his chest, so he loosened his hold. “Sorry.”

He tipped his head back and closed his eyes. What would they do with Luca now? What would they do with Loki? Odin was about to get what he wanted.

The door thumped open after a few minutes, and Thor strode in.

Loki lifted his head. “Don’t you have Frost Giants to go kill or something? You forgot your hammer.”

“They’ve been good. They still pay tribute, and we haven’t had much trouble from the outlying settlements either.”

“Hmm.”

“We’ll have the Tears now, thanks to Luca. He’s been here for a few minutes, and he agreed quite readily.” Thor stood by the bed to his right. “A human is better than you."

Loki side-eyed him. “Congratulations. I guess Luca thinks this water is great? I'm sure you left out the bad. You’ll cure all ills with it. No one will have to fear disease or injuries again. You’ll save countless lives and prevent so much suffering.” He lightly clapped his hands.
