Chapter 18

With Fred leading the way, Alexander trudged through the dense, dark woods. Emily was ahead of him, holding a bag of food in one hand and her small flashlight in the other.

There weren’t any streetlights in the woods, and with the tall trees, not much moonlight was getting through.

Emily’s flashlight was the only light guiding their way.

But Fred didn’t seem to need it. He seemed to know exactly where to go.

Judging from the layer of black ice, it was a path many had taken.

Even without his memory, Alexander had a gut feeling that he’d never been on this path before.

And it worried him.

Fred seemed nice and grateful for their gesture, but was it really wise to trust him so completely? They had, after all, known him for less than an hour. What if this was a trap? What if Fred was leading them to the bikers? He did seem to know quite a bit about them.

Alexander shifted the bags of hot coffee into one hand and grabbed Emily’s arm. He pulled her to a stop as his trained ears picked up a noise that didn’t usually belong in the silent woods. The tranquility of the winter season amplified every crunch of their steps. He wasn’t sure exactly what kind of red flag his sub-conscious mind was waving at him, but it was enough for him to pause.

He might not have his memories, but he still had his instincts.

Even without him saying a word, Emily cut off the light.

“Someone’s walking this way.” Alexander scanned the dark woods. “We should stay out of sight.”

Fred stopped and frowned, then nodded after a moment. “This way.”

They moved away from the dark ice and headed off to the side.

Fred’s arms flailed as he lost his balance, and Emily reached out to steady him.

Alexander smiled. Her reaction might have been instinctual, but it wasn’t the only time she’d reached out to Fred. He suspected that most people wouldn’t want to touch someone who had just been digging in the trash bin. But Emily hadn’t seemed at all bothered, which made Alexander want to kiss her.

Even in the midst of his fretting over the possible danger ahead, he couldn’t help but think about how extraordinary Emily was.

“Fred, no offense,” Emily said when Fred continued weaving among the trees. “But should we just wait for whoever is on the main path to pass instead of walking on like this?”

“Don’t worry, Miss. I know the whole area here like the back of my hand. I’ve been out here for a really long time.”

Emily zipped up her jacket and stuffed her flashlight and gloved hand into her pocket. “How do you guys live out here like this?”

“We have ways to stay warm.”

After a few more minutes, they emerged onto a beach. In the far corner, the dense woods stretched out toward the sea, cutting off this part of the beach. It would have been a nice place to camp, but he couldn’t imagine having to live out here all winter.
