A friend of mine was an air-hostess for many years and cannot get over the time she asked a teenager if he would like a drink.
âYeah, Iâll have a coke,â he said. âDonât you think you should say please?â she asked politely. The confused teenâs mother, who had overheard, replied, âYou donât have to say thank you to her, sheâs just a waitress.â Unbelievable.
The adults who have to deal with our teens on a daily basis and who are leaving their profession in droves because of the lack of respect they receive are teachers. I simply donât understand how children as young as five can stand up and proclaim, âI know my rightsâ But what about the teacherâs right to teach a class of children who can obey simple instructions and show respect for an adult?
Please make sure that your teens treat their teachers with the utmost respect. If at any point they feel they are being mentally bullied by a teacher, they should tell you and you can both deal with it, rather than trying to deal with it by pointing out âtheir rightsâ in the classroom.
Teenagers should also respect their elders, even if you think this sounds old-fashioned, and show it by holding doors open, standing to one side in corridors or narrow pavements to let them pass, giving up their seat on public transport and generally being courteous to them. If they see an adult they know, perhaps a friend of their parents, or a neighbour, rather than just nod a sullen acknowledgement or look the other way, they should stop and talk to them for just a few minutes.
