THE HEAT of the day didn’t dissipate, and as dusk fell, a breeze blew up, adding humidity and discomfort to the air. Maybe Mikael had been right. Clouds had been forming for a while, and they blotted out the sun before its time. “We need to get everything inside,” Christopher told Fredrik as the first gusts of wind blew through the compound, sending some of the lighter chairs tumbling. “Take the pups in, and I’ll help out here. Keep them calm.”

“Should we go to the pack house?”

“That’s up to you. Whatever you think is going to make them feel best.” He stroked both pups, who whined at Fredrik’s feet. “It’s going to be okay. Stay with Fredrik, and he’ll make sure you’re both safe.” Another gust of wind, stronger than before, swirled menacingly around them.

“Everyone, put things away,” Catherine told her children. “We may not have much time before this hits.”

“I’ll be in as soon as I can,” Christopher told Fredrik.

“Have you seen Kaiawa?” Stephan asked, almost skidding to a stop near them.

“I think he was out checking the pack borders. Go on up to the pack house and ask Alpha Mikael. He’ll know.”

Stephan nodded and took off at a run while Christopher got busy with the others, battening down anything that was loose. Once he was done, he hurried over to the cabin under construction. It was the most vulnerable building at this point, but the windows were in and so was the door. Whether that would give it the strength to survive a storm, only time would tell.

Christopher walked the outside of the building. He picked up a few stray boards and other things that might blow around, and put them inside. Once he was done, he hurried back toward the pack house, meeting Jerry as he did. “I put things away around the new cabin.”

“I was just going over to check.” They walked together to the main house and climbed the steps to the deck. “What the hell is that?” Jerry asked, pointing toward the horizon and down across the valley below.

“Looks like clouds touching the ground.”

“But it’s inside the valley, and they’re black.”

“You’ve got really good eyes.” Now that Jerry mentioned it, he could see whatever had dipped toward the ground was getting blacker and more ominous by the second.

The door slid open and closed behind them. “Are you watching that?” Mikael asked.

“Yeah,” Christopher said and let Jerry explain what they’d seen. “Do you know what it means?”

Mikael shook his head. “But it isn’t good. Let’s get everyone inside now. I have a feeling this storm is going to get very nasty.” Hearing fear in Mikael’s voice was something very unusual.

Christopher sprang into action. He hurried down the steps and helped the pack get the last of the outdoor things inside and locked away. Most headed to the pack house, but Christopher went to the guest cabin, where Fredrik and the pups were. He pulled open the door as a gust of wind blew inside, acting like it was alive and looking for something.
