VISITOR CENTERS
If you plan to do any hiking or exploring on your own, it is important to stop at a visitor center to get up-to-date information about weather conditions. Rangers also will know if any trails are temporarily closed due to wildlife activity. Before beginning any backcountry explorations, you must obtain permits, which you can get at visitor centers.
Colter Bay Visitor Center.
The auditorium here hosts several free daily programs about American Indian culture and natural history. Also, at 11 and 3 daily, a 30-minute Teton Highlights ranger lecture provides tips on park activities. | Colter Bay, ½ mi west of Colter Bay Junction on Hwy. 89/191/287, Oxbow Bend 83013 | 307/739–3594 | June–early Sept., daily 8–7; early Sept.–mid-Oct., daily 8–5.
Craig Thomas Discovery and Visitor Center.
Completed in August 2007, this center has interactive and interpretive exhibits dedicated to themes of preservation, mountaineering, and local wildlife. There’s also a 3-D map of the park and streaming video along a footpath showing the area’s intricate natural features. | ½ mi west of Moose Junction, Moose 83012 | 307/739–3399 | Early June–early Sept., daily 8–7; early Sept.–early June, daily 8–5.
Jenny Lake Visitor Center.
Geology exhibits, including a relief model of the Teton Range, are on display here. | S. Jenny Lake Junction, 8 mi north of Moose Junction on Teton Park Rd., Jenny Lake 83012 | 307/739–3392 | June–early Sept., daily 8–7; early Sept.–late Sept., daily 8–5.
Laurance S. Rockefeller Preserve Interpretive Center.
The park’s newest and eco-friendliest visitor center opened its doors 2008, a modern, wood-and-steel structure that feels more like an art gallery than an interpretive facility. The elegant, LEED-certified building is more than just eye candy—you can experience the sounds of the park in a cylindrical audio chamber, and laminated maps in the reading room are great for trip planning. | East side of Moose-Wilson Rd., about 4 mi south of Moose and 3 mi north of Granite Canyon Entrance Station 83012 | 307/739–3654 | Late May–early Sept., daily 8–6; early-Sept.–late Sept., daily 8–5.
