“So, now we need a weeding rota. Everyone will have to do their bit. That won’t be popular.” Samuel said.

“Needs must,” Philip said. “If we don’t get rid of those weeds, we’ll be eating them instead of vegetables.”

Samuel, Jane, and Philip were in the office, debating how to control the weeds smothering the vegetable allotments, when Cal arrived for the morning meeting. The door was open, so he knocked and walked straight in, taking a seat at the table.

The settlement’s office had been the manor’s Drawing Room before the plague. A place where the residents would have taken morning coffee whilst reading the newspapers. Now it was the administrative hub of Yellow Cross. The room was oval shaped and located at the front of the house with spectacular views over the estate. The centrepiece was a huge ornate marble fireplace, the grate filled with ash and half-burnt logs. Above this was mounted a vintage double-barrelled shotgun and a magnificent stag’s head. The stag’s dead eyes seemed to look down on the room accusingly.

Like most of the rooms in the Manor House, it was spacious with a high ceiling. The comfortable armchairs—intended for receiving visitors—had been shoved to one end of the room, making space for an oval table and chairs. The table was covered in books and folders.

The early morning sun streamed in through the French doors at one end.

Philip smiled. “Morning, Cal. I was worried you weren’t going to make it.”

“Good morning. Do you have to meet so early?”

“How’s the hangover?” Jane said.

“Is it that obvious?”

Jane shrugged.

“Yes, okay, I drank a bit too much last night. I don’t do it often, but I was a little stressed.”

Samuel was grinning. “Don’t worry. We’ve all been there. The important thing is you got here with most of your brain cells intact. Now, how about telling us what’s in store over the next few days?”

“One moment,” Jane said. “Before we move on to that, shall we get the formalities out of the way?”

“Oh yes, sorry, I was forgetting,” Samuel said.

Jane pulled two documents out of a folder and placed them before Cal. “I have made out a contract—two copies for signing.”

The document was impressive. Cal hadn’t been the only one burning the midnight oil.

“I don’t want to seem overly cautious,” Jane said, “But I wanted to avoid any misunderstandings later on.”

“No, of course. I quite agree.” Cal blinked to focus his eyes on the words. He glanced enviously at Samuel’s mug of coffee and his stomach rumbled, reminding him he’d not had breakfast.

The contract was titled ‘Operation Sledgehammer’ and had been produced with a manual typewriter. The document set out the agreement and stated Cal’s conditions. There were a couple of minor points Cal would have changed, but he didn’t want to quibble.

“You should check page three,” Jane said.

Cal turned over the page. There was a short list of activities limiting Cal’s absolute authority. They prohibited him from killing anyone, non-consensual sex and ordering anyone to act contrary to their religious or moral beliefs.
