It had to be near dawn when Jaks stumbled back to the upper chamber of the smugglerâs lair. It was impossible to tell time in the back of the caves but the lantern had exhausted nearly all its fuel and Jaks felt like powdered salt had been blown into his eyes. But heâd successfully removed all the pages from the book.
He reached the main chamber and ignored the slumbering crewmen to duck beneath the sailcloth banners and collapse on the bedroll beside Vivenne. She startled awake, sword in hand, and relaxed when she saw it was him.
âWhere were you?â she whispered harshly.
âWorking.â
âAt what?â
âAt making a plan,â he said, words muffled with his face in the blanket.
Eyes closed, he immediately drifted into sleep.
And was awoken by a scream what felt like a moment later.
He bolted upright, Vivenne beside him and groggily tried to make sense of the world, forgetting where he even was for a moment. Someone â a man â was screaming and babbling in terror while a low murmuring and cries of fear followed.
âStay behind me,â Jaks said and climbed to his feet, charging past the sailcloth divider.
What looked like the entire crew of landlocked sailors were gathered around the end of the kitchen area, shouting and cursing, some of them making witch fingers to ward off evil spirits. The subject of their unquiet was the two anubi jackal-headed men who held a struggling sailor between them. It was one of the four rapists Jaks had interrupted.
Atal was approaching the man with some sort of ivory, ceremonial jar in both hands â a jar with an ivory lid in the shape of a jackal head. Atal was shouting furiously at the man, and the entire crew, and the captive was crying and babbling. It was too fast, too heated, for Jaks to catch more than a few words of the Espinan traded between the Minandorese ruffians, but he gathered Atal was going to punish him, and the man was begging for his life.
If Jaks understood correctly, the sailor was pleading to have his balls cut off instead of whatever Atal had in store for him.
Grievous wept!
Jaks watched as the dogmen pinned the man on his back on the table, then forced his jaw open. He screamed piteously as the purple-robed sorcerer poured the hidden contents of the jar down his throat. The man went into seizures, spluttering and gagging, but moments later went still. Stone dead.
âDid he just poison that man?â Vivenne asked quietly from where she was pressed to his back. âWhy?â
âI do not know,â Jaks replied, never taking his eyes off Atal.
For a moment the sorcerer met his gaze, frowning like heâd found something unpleasant.
A moment after that and the dead sailor shrieked, sat up, and came back to life. The seizures started again and the man howled, flung himself on the floor and seemed to somehow⦠run on all fours, crashing headlong into one of the stone pillars. He rebounded, face a bloody mess and pawed at the air, grovelling and moaning, yellow foam erupting from his lips.
