“Are you sure it’s related to the case?” I asked a few minutes later after the four of us had reconvened inside Larose’s office.

The news that another body had been found on the island had come as a shock, and even though it was late, we’d rushed straight up to Larose’s office to discuss the new development. Da Silva and I were sitting in the two chairs in front of the captain’s desk while Holm stood off to the side, leaning against the wall at the left side of the office.

“To be honest, I’m not sure what to think,” Larose replied. Rather than sitting at his chair, he stood by his desk, pacing nervously as we discussed the facts of the case. “The circumstances are all fairly different, but I find it difficult to believe that the murder is unrelated, given the timing.”

“So, what are the circumstances?” I asked. “Was this body found on Palm Island too?”

“No.” Larose shook his head. “Actually, it was found here, in Kingstown. On the beach of one of the resorts.”

“I see,” I replied. “No offense, Captain, but are you sure it’s not possible that the timing was just a coincidence? That doesn’t sound all that similar to Clearwater.”

“I thought so as well, at first,” Larose admitted as he picked a paperweight off his desk and turned it over in his hands. “That was until I got the details about the condition of the body. Apparently, he was very, very badly beaten. Covered head to toe in bruises, and what’s more, he had thirty-three stab wounds all over his abdomen and face.”

“How many!?” I exclaimed in surprise.

“Well over thirty, according to the coroner’s report,” Larose replied. “I’m still working on getting all the information, but as it stands now, it’s evident that whoever killed him did not hold back. It honestly seems like they were trying to inflict as much pain as possible.”

“Do we know the identity yet?” Da Silva asked. “If he’s another missing person, then maybe he is one of the victims.”

“Well, we do know who he is,” Larose replied cautiously.

“Why do you sound so uncertain about it?” I asked suspiciously.

“Because that’s another way that this body differs from Clearwater’s,” he explained. “The man who was killed was Eugene Marguerite. He was a diamond tycoon from South Africa, here on vacation as far as we can ascertain.”

“A diamond tycoon?” Da Silva repeated. “Well, that’s a pretty far cry from the homeless men that have been targeted so far.”

“Unless he wasn’t one of the victims,” I remarked as a thought suddenly struck me. “A wealthy diamond tycoon doesn’t fit the description of the victims, but he does fit the description of the—”

“Party guests,” Holm finished, his eyes wide with realization.

“Wait, you think he might have been one of the people who was actually paying to hold the fights?” Da Silva looked at me in shock. “I guess you’re right. That does make more sense. But then who killed him?”

“I don’t know,” I replied. “Maybe
