“Jesus Christ!” Beckett ripped the flare gun out of her hand, grabbed her and took off running.

Behind them, the thunder of feet on the forest floor had all the hair on his neck raising. He reached for his weapon and retained his grip on Violette’s arm so he could drag her to safety.

A shot rang out. Tree bark exploded behind them.

“Is your father shooting at you too? Dammit!” He wanted to lay into Violette for taking risks and exposing their location. At the same time, he wanted her locked up in a safe place and spread naked on his bed.

First, he had to keep them both alive.

“Keep your head down! Faster!” He propelled her over logs and through trees. They crossed a wet, boggy section of ground, and her feet slowed in the muck. He tore her off her feet, swung her to a dry spot and they kept running.

When he spotted a big tree wide enough to hide her, he shoved her behind it. “Stay there. Don’t fucking move or I will turn you over my knee later.”

Her eyes registered shock and her jaw dropped, but she didn’t move or speak as he stepped out to meet the attack head-on.

He took aim and fired. The first man was blown backward and crumpled. A second spotted him and raised his weapon to shoot Beckett. The bullet ripped by his chest and lodged in a tree.

He whirled, horrified that it might be the tree shielding Violette. But when he spotted the chipped bark of a different tree, he sucked in a breath, whirled and shot the gun right out of the attacker’s hand, then put a bullet in his heart too.

A tiny scream came from around the tree, but he went still, throwing out his hearing for more men. He waited for long moments just to be sure no one else was lying in wait. But a minute later, the plane’s engines revved and through the trees, he watched it cut through the air.

Violette shifted to step out of her hiding spot, but he threw up a hand to stop her. “Wait!”

She didn’t budge, and he couldn’t help but think she didn’t want that spanking he warned her about.

With his focus on their surroundings, he only caught the rustle of leaves from behind the tree where Violette stood.

“What are you doing?”

“Tying my boot. I don’t want to trip if we have to run for it again.”

He waited another five minutes, then ten, before he called it clear. He moved to Violette’s side and held out a hand to her. Relief washed over her face, and she threw herself into his arms.

“That was terrifying!” Her voice was muffled against his chest.

He cradled her head in his palm and held her tighter. “You’re shaking.”

“Of course I am. We were being shot at! I’m sorry I put you in that position. I never should have fired that flare gun.”

He looked down at her. “No, you shouldn’t have, but you thought you were alerting your father we were here.
