I wake in the night. I feel for him in the darkness but his side of the bed is empty.

I get up, and wrap a silk robe around me, tying it at the waist. “Rafe?”

He’s not in the kitchen or the living room.

Using the code, I let myself into his office and carefully push the door open a crack.

I can hear him talking to someone. I can tell by his tone he’s angry. Agitated. He’s making an effort to placate whoever he’s talking to.

“I’m not listening to that kind of bullshit. You don’t know anything.” A pause. “I know you don’t want to accept it but you have to,” he says gruffly. “It’s over, Vanessa. I don’t know what else I can say to you to get you to understand.”

So that’s who he’s talking to.

“No. Meeting with you won’t change my mind. Goddamn it. There’s nothing else to say. I’m trying to be as kind as I can about this, but this is getting way out of hand. I’m—” Another long pause. Rafe sighs heavily. “Look, crying’s not going to—No. You have to accept it. Please, just fucking deal with it. It’s over.”

I think about leaving him to it. Maybe he wants privacy, but he feels my presence. He turns and sees me. He motions for me to come in.

I walk over and sit on his desk. His clenched fist is resting on his thigh.

He’s worried about how I might react, I can read that in his eyes. Vanessa’s voice is shrill through the phone as she cries and pleads with him.

“Look,” he says brusquely. “I have to go now. I’ve told you how it is. Please just accept that. And please—for the last time—stop contacting me. I won’t reply again. There’s nothing more to say. Goodbye, Vanessa.”

Rafe ends the call, turns off his phone and places it on his desk.

“Hi.” His voice is dark-edged, unsettled.

“Hi.”

He’s in a volatile mood. I’ve seen it many times before, and it’s there now, in the dark glint of his eyes. He stands up. He looks huge, hulking, strong. He’s wearing only a pair of jeans. The play of his muscles, taut and powerful, is riveting. If I didn’t know him so well and trust him so implicitly, I might feel intimidated.

I concentrate on his beauty. The light sneer of his mouth. “I suppose you’re mad at me, are you?”

“No.”

“She keeps saying she has something she wants to tell me in person. But I’m done.”

“I heard.”

“She’s … making threats. About hurting herself. That’s the only reason I called her back.”

“Is she all right?”

He contemplates me. “You want to know if she’s all right.” It’s not a question. “She’s insane, but still alive, apparently. I’m not trying to be heartless. I’m just over it.”

He stares down at me, as though expecting me to challenge him.

“I’m not mad at you, Rafe. You had to make sure she’s okay. That’s understandable.”

“I’ve done my best to let her down easy, but she’s fighting me every step of the way.
