The next two hours flew by. Mazie's focus was infectious. By the time Danni was certain he'd mapped out all the elements from the pendant's original enchantment, and Mazie had double verified them, he was surprised to find that, for a time at least, he'd been able to ignore Cam's presence in his mind. Remembering drew his attention back to it—but Cam was less worried and more engaged at the moment, probably talking to Lyssa about one thing or another. He sensed some minor ups and downs emotionally, but nothing like what he'd felt before.

He made an effort to refocus on the task at hand, but it was Mazie who needed the break.

"I only minored in witchcraft," she explained. "Keeping all that in my head gives me this itch back here." She tapped the base of her skull. "Like trying to thread a needle. That's why I majored in engineering. Logic and math is my home turf; witchcraft is fascinating, but a little too abstract for me to do it full time."

"I think that's why I like it," Danni said. "I can sort of feel my way around it, instead of having to think too hard."

"Don't let some of the witchcraft majors hear you say that," she giggled. "It's a stressful program for most of them."

He smiled, indulging in the tickle of pride for once.

"So, not to pressure you, but you know we have a counselor that's an omega, too, right?" Mazie asked.

Danni sighed, and shrugged. "I know, I've heard. I keep meaning to see her but... I just sort of didn't want anyone to know. Hence the necklace."

"Why not? If you don't mind my asking, I mean; it's none of my business, I know."

"It's okay," Danni said. "Being an omega, traditionally, means certain things. On the reservations, we don't mate. Ever. We're sort of mated to the pack. I know that this isn't the reservation, and those rules don't apply, but... a lot of shifters think we're only good for one thing. And humans sometimes think the same thing."

"Sex, you mean." Mazie clarified. It was more a scientific question than a personal one.

Danni cleared his throat, "Um, yeah."

"There are plenty of progressive shifters here, though," she said. "It's college. Everyone's liberal, at least until they graduate. That's what college is for."

"That's what I was hoping, I guess," Danni admitted. "But, there's more to it, too. With wolves especially, there's no way to know why someone wants to be with me. Even with training, the whole point of people like me is to... entice, I guess, and get other shifters, um, in the mood."

"You think so?" Mazie asked, honestly.

"It's hard coded," Danni said. "I want to be more than my nature, more than what I was made for. I want to be made for me; not just a pack play-thing."

"I guess I hadn't really thought about the role of omegas," Mazie said. "But I think you're headed in the right direction, for what it's worth. Foxes were made to be assassins and scouts.
