When you get invited to conferences, conventions, and literary events, it’s natural for people to assume you have achieved a sort of competence as a professional writer. I’ve given presentations at the Writer’s Digest Annual Conference; I’ve spoken on panels and signings at New York Comic Con.1 And every time writers come up to me afterwards with questions—about the creative process, my work, and the legal and business aspect of writing. Which, to this day, I remember how much I know alarmingly little about.

These are stressful moments, because I can almost see my stature shrinking as the conversation goes on. When a writer first approaches me, I am a Published Author Who Knows the Secret. By the end of the conversation, I am the Incoherent Moron Who Isn’t Wearing Pants, but I Could Swear He Was Wearing Pants Just a Moment Ago … My God, How Did He Remove His Pants Without My Noticing? In other words, people have certain assumptions about what it takes to acquire the “professional” part of Professional Writer, and I must sadly inform them that I know and practice almost none of it.
