Our duty is to prevent that from happening moving forward, because Martí lived and died for them. Our revolutionary education has not been sufficiently successful “for the good of all.” Perhaps the massive scale that was its obligation conspired against the quality that was its ideal. In any case, almost thirty years after the triumph of the Revolution, we face increasing disbelief and disenchantment in greater sectors of our youth, those who are illiterate as well as the intellectual minorities. We know this youthful nihilism, which finds expression in the philosophical current called “postmodernism,” is a universal phenomenon but that in this country it is not a dominant trend. Yet in this field the intellectual minorities have an unexpected responsibility, and the Revolution, as massive as it might be, has to see in every demoralized youth, in every political unbeliever, in all marginal and antisocial elements, an undeniable and painful failure. . . . Let us make our maximum effort to make it possible for Martí’s word to reach them. (Resistencia 150)
