Rather than the question/answer format of the methods discussed above, fieldnotes are, very simply, your observations of a place, area, person, or interaction. Fieldnotes, like the unstructured interview, are most commonly associated with the larger method of ethnography but may also be created through the observation that might be conducted when scouting a location for research, getting some background information on an event, or doing a class assignment for a methods class.

Fieldnotes have a built-in scaffolding process leading to the final product (usually the excerpts included in your paper, report, thesis, or dissertation). The process often begins with jottings or scratch notes. These are quick notes you take while on the scene. This is followed by the expansion of these notes, which should occur as soon as possible after the jottings to ensure little data is lost. Finally, the “final” fieldnotes are written. Reflections and analyses of the data may happen concurrently with jottings, may occur during the expansion of the fieldnotes, or may be done as analysis through the creation of themes and collections of thoughts, images, and documents. Although some researchers publish or make their fieldnotes available, fieldnotes generally act as data and are not an end in themselves. However, if you are conducting research for an organization or company, it may require the submission of both your fieldnotes and your analysis of them.
