Adversity as a Motivator
We naturally want to avoid making mistakes and having failures, right? Well it’s really the only way to learn most of the time. Writing bad books is not a waste of time. Writing in a niche that doesn’t sell was not a waste. It was a learning experience with both your writing style and learning about what sells and what doesn’t. That’s why writing a book a week is so much more beneficial than writing a book every six months or more. Learning and perfecting your craft weekly is a heck of a lot faster than bi-yearly.
Adversity is a writer's best friend not just in making them a better writer, but also in getting the motivation to write. Even if you enjoy writing there will be days you just don’t feel like it. A book a week is a hard goal to achieve. You need to push through those days you just don’t feel like it. Why are you interested in writing a book a week? Are you stuck in a job you hate and want the freedom of making a living writing books? Did you lose your job recently and are desperate for income? Take the reason why you want to write weekly and brand it into your forehead.
You need to remind yourself of the adversity you are facing to motivate your writing. People are like thermostats in their house. They only do something when the temperature gets too high or too low to pull themselves back into their comfort zone. Remind yourself of why you are uncomfortable.
Psychologist Abraham Maslow did a study on self-actualizers, which are people that live their lives with a unique purpose. He said that the most important learning lessons with these people were from tragedies, death, and trauma. That these forces created lasting changes in people that, in turn, changed everything they did. So what’s your issue, and why do you want to write a ton of books? Having adversity is the strongest motivator you can have. Bring that adversity up everyday to motivate you to write.
Adversity can send someone into a downward spiral or be used as pure motivational energy. Your beliefs about the adversity, and not the actual adversity, are what determine how you feel about it. It is one of the most powerful ways to change your life with endless energy and purpose.
