Finnegans Wake, which was finally published in complete form in 1939, is packed with puns and invented words, and is full of foreign terms (from at least 40 different languages). It is a dream-novel, depicting a stream of the unconscious – doing for sleep what Ulysses did for waking life. It is impenetrable, and most readers are still defeated by it, apart from a few passages, which can be beautiful and hilarious by turns.

Finnegans Wake was Joyce’s last work. In January 1941, he had an operation for a perforated ulcer, and died soon afterwards. He is buried in Zurich, as the Irish authorities refused Nora permission to take his remains to Dublin for burial.
