Hunted

Two days later, I still haven’t seen Harken.

It’s late afternoon and I’m in my bedchamber. I trained earlier today at Fire Hall with Lupa and my new sword.

I should be happy.

My hands hover over the braid. Don’t, I tell myself fiercely. Whatever it is I’m hoping to find, I’ve no right to use the braid connection to go looking. Far worse, I suspect I’m reaching for the visions because what I really want to do is reach for Harken himself.

And that scares me to the Dreaver’s Tells and back again.

Take the man, and pay forever.

I play the scene in the gondolino over in my mind, as I have every hour since I saw him. I just want to know the truth, I tell myself. But what truth is it, exactly, that I’m hoping to find?

Whether it’s Torsten or someone else who is behind Arkady’s appearance in the Seam matters little to me, or to the bargain Harken and I made. Our encounter in the gondolino has only served to make me even more uncomfortably aware that my curiosity has much less to do with logical answers and much more to do with who Harken is.

But, I argue with myself, something happened in that ballroom when he met Torsten. That much I do know. In the brief moment of their encounter, the twisted smile and reluctant humor of the man I thought I was coming to know fled, replaced by a dark stranger I’ve seen only in my visions. He’s been distant ever since.

Harken has left me no choice, I tell myself. He’s made it clear he won’t talk about his past. If I want answers, I will have to go in search of them myself.

I reach for the braid with the same relief an addict does Darkwine and fall willingly into the mists.
