Chapter Twenty
Harry entered the kitchen with a duffel bag over his shoulder. Granville and Chamberlain sat at the island drinking wine. In idler moments Harry had wondered how many bottles they got through each week, and what their bill might be per month.
He placed the bag roughly down in a gap on the island and barked out, âBinoculars?â
Granville and Chamberlain looked at each other. âYou were the one with a fledgling interest in birdwatching,â Chamberlain drawled. âOr so you professed.â
âThat was many years ago, George.â
âSurely youâve still got your old pair. They certainly cost you enough.â
âThey were priced quite reasonably for the quality,â Granville sniffed. âIâll see if I can dig them out.â
He left the kitchen and headed upstairs. Chamberlain ran a critical eye over Harryâs outfit. âThey say black is slimming, I suppose, but you can have too much of a good thing, dear.â
âIâm not too bothered about my appearance tonight, believe it or not.â
âThat would imply that you are interested sometimes, but I must say that Iâm yet to see any evidence-â
Harry took a gun from the bag and placed it heavily on the hard surface.
âOh my,â Chamberlain said, leaning backwards a few inches on his stool. âWherever did you come across such a thing?â
âThe night I rescued Cavill. Thought I was rescuing her, at least.â
âAnd youâve had this in the house ever since?â
âIâve been letting the kids in the park play with it too, from time to time. When theyâve asked nicely.â
âMost amusing. My point, old boy, is-â
âIâm here to protect Rupert,â Harry said, taking the pistol swiftly apart to check one final time that everything was in perfect working order. âAnd, to a lesser extent, you. Having a gun handy can help with those sorts of things.â
âActually, from a statistical perspective, thereâs some debate as to whether-â
âNot in my experience, there isnât.â
Harry emptied the magazine onto the island. Chamberlain peered down, holding the seemingly-forgotten glass of wine suspended by its stem. âAnd these are the⦠bullets, I suppose?â
âYouâre quite an expert.â
Footsteps sounded on the stairs then Granville reappeared at the door. âVoila,â he said, and swept up to Harry holding a small leather case aloft. Harry took it from him, removed the binoculars and their lens caps, and tried them out.
âTheyâll do.â
âThatâs it?â
âYouâve proved yourself to be an integral part of this operation,â Harry said, as he put the binoculars away and placed the case in his bag. âWithout this contribution, Iâd have been a dead man walking. Now, thanks to you-â
âI think he might be humouring you, dear,â Chamberlain said, voice echoing in his wine glass as he went to take a sip.
Harry put the pistol away last of all, Granville and Chamberlain both eyeing it uneasily as he did, and zipped up the bag. He took his phone from his pocket and opened a map then scrolled northwest towards the Cotswolds.
âCan we get you anything else?â Granville asked.
âA sniper rifle would help.â
âAh,â Chamberlain sucked in his cheeks. âIâm afraid we gifted ours to a friend.
