We Need Each Other

Out of the nine tattoos on my body, four of them are matching tattoos that I got with other people. You could say that matching tattoos are my love language. My wife and I both have tattoos that say, “Stay awake” as a reminder to stay present and do our best to not miss all of the incredible moments around us every day. My two best friends from college and I all have roman numeral III on our sides because, well, there’s three of us. My wife and I have two best friends, Marx and Paul. They are also a couple, they are also gay, and so yeah, we all got matching rainbow tattoos one day. Last but not least, my wife and I also have matching tattoos with our friend Rachel. The three of us have the number nineteen on our wrists. The story behind this tattoo reminds me every day why choosing freedom is difficult, worth it, and extremely vulnerable.

I had been friends with Rachel for about a year or two before I told her about me and Sami, but she already knew, or at least she strongly suspected. Right in the beginning of my friendship with Rachel (which was also the middle of the “oh my God I’m gay” shitstorm), I decided to run a half marathon, and Rachel, being a big running advocate and amazing friend, drove me from LA to San Francisco to run the race. On the way home, we were driving through the middle of nowhere California. We had run through what I thought were all possible conversation topics, and then after a slight pause, she said, “Sami is gay, right?”

I literally froze. How did she know! (To be fair I think the better question is how did people not know. We wore matching Birkenstocks and took all of our vacations together.) But I did not know what to do, and I just blurted out, “Um no, hmmmm, maybe. Not that I know of. Probably not.”

I think I was awkward enough for Rachel to leave it alone for the time being. But ever since I met her and certainly after that conversation, she was very high on my list of people I was pretty sure would support us if we gave her the opportunity, and damn was I right. We initially met Rachel because we all went to the same church—the church where I was a pastor and Sami ran marketing and production and had a hand in most of the creative output of the church. Rachel and her whole family were some of the many people who found that church and instantly felt like they were at home, that this was the church they had been looking for their whole lives.

It had so very much to offer. It was extremely racially and ethnically diverse (for a church), and we didn’t shy away from hard conversations about race. Women were represented in leadership roles, which felt like a huge win at the time.
