The Republic was created to serve every single citizen. Sometimes we have to enforce rules that you may question, but it’s important to understand: our goal is the greater good. We must all work together to achieve the greater good, and the greater good starts with each of you . . .

Tuning out the message, my other senses seek information to understand my new situation. The vast open space is divided into sections, each a copy of the others. People, clad in uniforms like mine, are positioned every few feet. They stand beside conveyor belts carrying items from one section to another. Each person contributes to the process in some way—dumping materials into machines, sorting items as they pass by, and packaging finished products.

They’re all workers. The Reclaiming Center is actually a labor camp, and I’ve gotten myself enlisted.

* * *

By the second day of my service, I’ve committed the routine to memory. I anticipate every step, every turn, and every stop before a baton can be raised in my direction. The highlight of my day is mealtime.

I’ve learned to seamlessly slide into the food line, keeping pace with the others as they push their trays along the counter. The choices worsen with each step, ranging from seaweed green sludge to a gelatinous loaf of what may or may not be meat. Nothing looks appetizing, but my stomach grumbles in hunger.

This place is nothing like I expected. In school, we were taught Reclaimance Centers were places for citizens who forgot their allegiance to the Republic. I imagined parallel rows of desks aligned in a classroom much like my own. An uptight teacher would pace up and down the aisles, proclaiming the value of each rule and regulation set forth by our leaders.

I could easily lie my way through memorization and testing. But that’s not what we do here. Just like back home, labor is our primary goal. Others like me, swept away at the first mention or act of anarchy, piece together clothing, weapons, or supplies as history lessons blare over the public address system.

We make a captive and bored audience. All day, our fingers flutter across machinery, ensuring it’s loaded with materials to crank out what feels like an endless stream of finished products for the Republic. The work is mindless, practically inviting our brains to absorb any sound, even if it’s a faceless voice declaring the necessity of our unwavering loyalty.

Sometimes I’m able to block out the announcements, conjuring memories of my family when it was whole. Besides the four of us and Captain, there was Kai, Mira’s best friend for as long as I can remember. Their friendship evolved into romance and grew stronger even when Kai graduated from an apprentice to a full-fledged Enforcer. He was never like the others. Or at least the ones I’ve been unlucky enough to meet.

He spent more time at our house than his own. If Mira was home, Kai was right beside her. After Mira was summoned in last year’s Culling, his path stopped crossing ours.
