any prodding. Occasionally, I’d sense

him trying to reel back and soften his

candor, but it never lasted long. He is who he is, and that’s precisely why I

wanted him on the show in the first

place.

One thing about his interview peo-

ple still ask me about are his thoughts on the Chris Benoit/Kevin Sullivan

split in WCW. The fabled departure of

Benoit and some friends from World

Championship Wrestling occurred

because Kevin Sullivan had been put in

charge of the show. In an effort to mol-lify the group, which was threatening

to quit, WCW gave Benoit a World

Sid Vicious

Title win . . . over Sid Vicious.

Now, I’ve always thought I knew

the full story. Apparently not, according to Sid.

“People who were in charge, like Kevin Nash and Kevin Sullivan, those people like that . . . they were doing a pretty good job of using, you know, what I figured was the talent they had there. When Vince Russo came in, he started using guys like Chris Benoit, Dean Malenko, Perry Saturn, Shane Douglas. Nothing against those guys, because they’re all good. They work really hard, okay? And Vince Russo is a really nice guy with stuff like this, but he was letting them have a lot of input. . . .

They were getting way too crazy with it, like trying to figure out who they were working with at TV, before they got there . . . get all their schemes taken care of and stuff like that, which to me is ridiculous. I’m the type of person that needs to know when I get there — not days before. But what they were trying to do, and everybody knows this, they were trying to start a union to remove Kevin Sullivan and bring back Vince Russo. [WCW executive vice president] Bill Busch and everyone

. . . already knew what they were up to. Bill Busch came up to me personally. I think he had a trust in some of the things he could ask me.

So he told me about it. I was told that day, that morning, at the gym, that I was dropping the belt to Chris and I thought it was a little shocking. Nothing against Chris, but if you put the World Title on someone who means nothing, to make them mean something . . . So that does make sense? To a certain degree, because he’s such a hard worker

. . . but not a credible World Champion. To me, [he’s] like a Rey Mysterio. Not just that he wasn’t pushed enough — Rey and Chris have been pushed really hard for a long time, and if you don’t see it, then you’re not watching the TV everyone else is seeing. They’re really not World Champions that can carry a territory, you know, and I’m pretty much sure they didn’t expect them to.
