The M35 rank insignia retained the M19 system of red diamonds, bars, squares and triangles, but these were now edged in gold (yellow metal). In addition, combat arm officers wore gold collar-patch piping, and gold embroidered stars and gold braid and red cloth chevrons (point down) above the cuffs. The M35 greatcoat collar patches were cloth rhomboids with piping, and a brass branch badge above the rank insignia; those of the M35 service tunic or field shirt were oblong cloth parallelograms with piping on three sides, and the branch badge behind the rank badges:

Marshal Sovetskogo Soyuza: ‘Combined arms’ red rhomboid collar patches piped gold, with a 6cm diameter (greatcoat) or 5cm (tunic/field shirt) gold embroidered star; cuffs, 6cm (greatcoat) or 5cm (tunic/field shirt) gold star, above 3cm wide gold and 1.5cm medium red chevrons.

Komandarm 1-go ranga: Infantry-crimson collar patches piped gold, with 22mm gold star and 4 diamonds; cuffs, 6cm (greatcoat) or 5cm (tunic/field-shirt) gold star above 3cm wide gold chevron.

Other general officers: Branch-colour (infantry, cavalry, armour, artillery only) collar patches piped gold, with branch badge and 4–1 diamonds; cuffs, 4–1x 1.5cm medium gold chevrons.

Field officers: Branch-colour collar patches piped gold, with branch badge and 3–1 bars; cuffs, 1.5cm medium red chevron with 0.5cm upper and lower gold edging, or 2–1x 1.5cm medium red chevrons. The rank of podpolkovnik (lieutenant-colonel) was announced 1 September 1939 but not introduced until 26 July 1940.

Subalterns: Branch-colour collar patches piped gold, with branch badge and 3–1 squares; cuffs, 3–1x 0.75cm narrow red chevrons.

NCOs: Branch-colour collar patch with branch-colour piping, branch badge, and 4–2 triangles.

Men: Branch-colour collar patch with branch-colour piping and branch badge.

Officer cadets (kursanty) wore mostly officers’ uniform with NCOs’ and men’s rank insignia.
