Chapter Eight

Castle Swan’s Dark Forest

Invisible, Alastair flew high in the dusky sky, following his traitorous brother and Holly Duff to Castle Swan. Before Alastair had been sucked into the black hole, Duncan had promised not to let go. But he’d been too weak, just like his father had always said. Now, he’d pay for his atrocity.

He was surprised that after getting hit in the head his brother hadn’t gone crawling back to the Wolfe. He’d sped past them as they rested at a smelly pond near the Castle Swan. It had used to be pleasant and drew swans of every kind, but the darkness in the castle had turned it evil. Now, nothing grew there. Not that he cared. All he wanted to do was get back to the twenty-first century.

He landed on the balcony that led into his guest room. He transformed back into a man and walked inside. There was a four-poster canopy bed and oak furniture. Even in the twenty-first century, he preferred the ornate, not the slick lines of the future. He quickly dressed into a gambeson and put on his chainmail. He’d be so glad to be back in jeans and T-shirts, but he needed to fit in this backward time period.

Someone pounded on his door. “Alastair, are you in there?”

“I am here, Henry.”

Not asking if he could enter, Henry entered Alastair’s quarters. His arrogance irritated Alastair, and he’d like to have frozen him, but he was one of Balthazar’s, and it was best not to anger the demon. Henry was older than Alastair, but younger than the Wolfe. He had worry lines around his shifty eyes, and he marched back and forth across the floor.

“They are coming.”

Alastair shrugged. “Aye, they’ll be here shortly.”

“The Keeper is with him.”

“Obviously.”

“I thought if you were invisible other dragons could see you?”

“True. But I found a spell in the scriptures that allows me to turn invisible and prevents other dragons from seeing me. My idiot brother didna even know I was there.” It wasn’t exactly what happened. Duncan had sensed evil, but his inferior power had failed to detect his own brother—the idiot.

“We can’t let her touch the Scriptures.” Henry licked his thin lips. “Balthazar would be angry.”

“With you.”

Henry stopped pacing but kept wringing his long fingers. “You’re as much part of this as I am.”

Alastair straightened his tabard. “I’m not the one who let a dragon knight steal a scroll.”

“What shall we do?”

“Lead them to the dungeon where we can spring the trap.” He walked over to Henry and put his hands around his thick throat. “Donna panic this time, Henry. Balthazar isn’t the only one ye have to fear.”

Henry’s blue eyes bulged. “I won’t. I promise. But Balthazar said he wants the Keeper.”

Alastair released him. “He will. After I make my brother suffer. I want him to watch me rape the lovely Holly Duff over and over again until he’s sick with rage.”

“Why is this so important to you?”

“Because my brother shouldn’t have betrayed me. He should have been stronger.
