We are talking here of genuine, multi-layered sustained change – personal, relational, structural and cultural – as distinct from delivering a project which may or may not be part of that change. So, we need to think holistically, and medium-to-long term, taking into account many factors often left out in the interests of clarity.

Secondly, developing a strategy does not need to take months and does not necessarily require support from strategy “experts” or consultants. The most important requirement is commitment and sufficient time and space to think. Doing this in an office, surrounded by the buzz of day-to-day routine, is unlikely to generate the quality of thinking and contributions that you’ll need, so try to find a quiet place away from your regular work as the location for your discussions.

Thirdly, doing all of this depends on your context. Are you a member of a formal organisation or NGO, or are you more independent? Are you in a situation where you can talk about your plans openly, and consult widely, or do you have to be more secretive due to the difficult, maybe oppressive circumstances you are in? Maybe you will need two strategies, a public one, acceptable to the authorities, and a confidential one. Can you take the time you need to think and plan or are you in a hurry as the situation is changing rapidly; would it be helpful to think of the different scenarios that may emerge.

Finally, remember that we are not the first people to be doing this. There is much that has been learned, and we can make good use of this experience and research. One fruit of this wider experience is that we now see how crucial it is for our action and strategy to complement, and ideally be informally coordinated with, the work of others, especially in conflict-affected contexts.
