Introduction

This chapter discusses three functions of assumptions: (1) guiding argumentation, evidence generation, and conclusions, (2) guiding the selection of methodology, and (3) providing the foci for paradigms and theories. For the first two functions, assumptions are often used consciously or even explicitly. It is for the third function that assumptions often perform a latent yet most powerful role.
