The demand for English-speaking au pairs is very small, possibly because childcare and nursery provision is so good in Scandinavia. Au pair agencies in the Nordic countries seem to offer almost exclusively outgoing programmes. In addition to the online matching services like GreatAuPair.com (see introductory Childcare chapter), one specialist online agency is the Scandinavian Au-Pair Center ([email protected]; www.aupair.se) in Helsingborg, Sweden whose website lists quite a few family vacancies in Sweden and the odd one in the rest of Scandinavia. It lists far more profiles of experienced au pairs looking to work for a family in Sweden. Many Scandinavian families employ au pairs from developing countries such as the Philippines and Thailand. Extensive information about the rules governing non-European au pairs may be found on the relevant immigration sites, for example www.nyidanmark.dk. Wages vary but expect the monthly minimum in Denmark to be DKK4,000 (£460) and in Iceland 12,500 Icelandic kroner per week (£88).
